Special Services During School Closure

March 30, 2020

Dear Parents/Guardians of Students Receiving Special Education and Related Services,

We hope this email finds you doing well. We also want to acknowledge the many challenges you may be facing in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is important to us to help you understand the desire of our special services team to partner with you during this time to support the health, well-being, and educational needs of your child.

Per the CDC and the Johnson County Health Department, it is not safe or advisable to send staff into homes under the circumstances. We will not provide face-to-face special education services to students during the closure.

During the week of March 30th to April 3rd, your child’s Case Manager will make contact with you to determine the special education and related services that will be provided throughout the closure of schools.

These services will be documented within a USD #230 Specialized Continuous Learning Plan and will be separate from your child’s current IEP services. IEP services as currently documented within your child’s IEP will resume when schools resume normal operations.

Specialized Continuous Learning Plans will be written in a collaborative effort between our families and special education teams to develop services that are reasonable in light of the current circumstances. It is anticipated that these services will look significantly different, but will be designed and implemented to support access to the general education curriculum (the current District Continuous Learning Plan) and maintain progress made on individual IEP Goals.

We want you to know we are here for you during this extraordinary time.  Thank you in advance for your continued patience, grace, and understanding as we navigate this new path together.

Respectfully,

USD #230 Special Services
